The St. Augustine Woman’s Exchange and The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center are pleased to invite you to a weekend of riveting Presentations and Exhibits on Unknown Heroes of the mid-19th Century, Slavery, Abolitionism, the Civil War and Reconstruction. Learn what was happening in African American Saint Augustine between 1838 – 1890, the period when Frederick Douglass was called the Prophet of Freedom. The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center’s exhibit is a brief exposé on the African American story in St Augustine from 1838-1890 and will cover various topics from Florida Statehood through the Post-Reconstruction Era, including a look at Frederick Douglass’s time in St. Augustine and African American fashion post-Civil War.
Learn about Anna Murray Douglass, Frederick Douglass’s wife of forty-four years and how she silently helped gain his freedom from slavery as well as helped hundreds of others to freedom. Anna was an abolitionist, emancipator, and businesswoman in the mid-19th century. Our special exhibit includes a replica of Anna’s wedding dress by special guests Lana Turner, Chair of The Literary Society based in New York City and noted New York City dress designer Cassandra Bromfield. Together, Lana and Cassandra created the anniversary dress as a celebration of her life and legacy, culminating in a reenactment of the Douglass wedding which was featured in the New York Times on October 4, 2022.
