Woman’s Exchange luncheons are a St. Augustine tradition.

Shopping and lunching with friends are the formula for success of the popular Woman’s Exchange of St. Augustine’s two seasonal luncheon series. Begun in the late 1940s when the city’s hotels and tourist homes reopened after World War II to winter visitors, the weekly luncheons featured two seatings, one at noon and the other at 1:30. The gourmet meals, made by Woman’s Exchange members from their own recipes, were served buffet style on steam tables. The patrons then carried their plates to assigned tables covered by colorful garden umbrellas. And, after lunch, they shopped in the Woman’s Exchange Gift Shop.

Today, there are two series of twice-weekly luncheons for three weeks in the fall and three weeks in the spring. Recipes used are chosen by the head cook at each luncheon. All of our members are state-certified food handlers. Just as members before them, all of the preparations − menu planning, cooking, set up, serving and clean-up − are done by them. Many of the recipes are often shared in our Woman’s Exchange cookbook which is for sale in our gift shop. The luncheons are themed to the season. Christmas in October highlights holiday gifts. Miss Anna’s Emporium features spring and summer merchandise. The shop expands during luncheons into the Peña-Peck House dining room, visitors orientation center, and the old kitchen. To showcase the beautiful handcrafted items made by our consignors, we start searching for unusual and unique items months before the luncheons. We find that many of our guests plan their shopping, particularly for the holidays, around our annual sales. The luncheons include a full meal with dessert, coffee or tea, plus a $5 gift certificate to be used for shopping that day on a $10 minimum purchase. Guests may bring a bottle of wine to enjoy with lunch. Wine glasses are provided on request. Reservations are required. We start four months before the date of the first luncheon in every series. And they sell out very quickly. We also create waiting lists. Reservations are required. Please call the Woman’s Exchange at 904- 829-5064 for the date when reservations begin for each series. Reservations open on June 1, 2016 and must be made by phone or in person at The Woman’s Exchange. Please call (904) 829-5064 or stop by in person at The Woman’s Exchange Gift Shop, 143 St. George St., just south of Cathedral Place. Please call early as reservations usually sell out very quickly. Waiting lists are then created and many reservations clear but, there is no guarantee. If you leave a message, please leave a callback number as your phone message is not a confirmed reservation. Advance payment is required by Sept. 15. You can pay by credit card or check any time prior to that date and credit card charges can be done by phone. The fee is $30 plus Florida sales tax, per person which also includes a $5 coupon off a $10 minimum purchase on the day of the luncheon. We offer a vegetarian option but we cannot offer vegan or gluten-free.


Lunch is served at noon and shopping begins at 10:30 a.m. Opportunities abound in the Gift Shop, Dining Room, Visitor Orientation Center and the Old Kitchen for unique Christmas gifts.
